There is an argument to be made that the finest restaurant in Victoria Falls has no walls, no roof, and no fixed address. It moves with the current, changes its view every few minutes, and occasionally pauses while a pod of hippos decides whether to surface. The Zambezi Sunset Cruise with Dinner is that restaurant – and the 2.5 hours you spend on board combine the most beautiful wildlife-watching light of the day with a 3-course meal that gives the evening a completeness that no land-based dinner can quite replicate.
This is the option for couples celebrating something, families wanting an evening that feels genuinely special, solo travellers who want to end their Victoria Falls stay on exactly the right note, or anyone who has spent the day at the falls and wants the evening to match it.
Your boat departs from the Victoria Falls jetty as the late afternoon begins its transition to evening. The Zambezi above the falls is wide, unhurried, and full of life at this hour. As the boat moves through the island channels and along the Zimbabwean bank, the light shifts from the bright clarity of afternoon to the warm amber of pre-sunset – the hour that wildlife photographers wait all day to reach.
Hippos are the constant companions. Large pods surface throughout the cruise, bellowing and jostling in the current, their broad backs catching the low light in a way that makes photography instinctive. Elephants come to drink as the heat eases, often in family groups that linger at the water’s edge long enough to observe properly. Crocodiles rest on sandbanks at eye level from the boat. African Fish Eagles call repeatedly from their perches in the dead trees along the bank.
Your guide is reading all of this continuously – adjusting the boat’s position to follow interesting sightings, slowing the engine when something worth watching presents itself, and offering context and information throughout the cruise.
While the wildlife unfolds around you, a 3-course dinner is served on board. The menu is prepared fresh and reflects the quality of a proper evening meal – starter, a generous main course, and dessert – accompanied by the full bar service that is a hallmark of all Sonnenhell river cruises. The service is unhurried, timed to the rhythm of the evening rather than the clock.
Dietary requirements – vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal – are accommodated with advance notice. Please advise at the time of booking.
The final hour of the cruise is the one guests describe most often. The sky above the Zambezi does extraordinary things as the sun approaches the horizon – sequences of colour that shift faster than photography can quite keep up with, reflected in the river surface and silhouetting the wildlife on the banks. Your guide will position the boat for the best possible view as the light changes. By the time the boat turns back toward the jetty, the sky is deep, the stars are beginning to appear, and the evening feels complete.
Bring your travel voucher, camera, binoculars, insect repellent, sunscreen during the hot season and a jersey during the cooler months.
Very part of this tour was excellent. Our room was lovely – larger than expected. We had a balcony which I really enjoyed.
