Flight of Angels Victoria Helicopter Tour - Victoria Falls Helicopter Flight
David Livingstone first saw Victoria Falls in 1855, he wrote that the sight was so beautiful it must have been watched by angels in flight. That famous description gave rise to the name Flight of Angels, and anyone who experiences a Victoria Falls helicopter flight today can easily understand why the name has stood the test of time.
From ground level, Victoria Falls is so vast that it is hard to take in at once. The view changes completely from an altitude of approximately 300 meters. The entire landscape opens before your eyes, revealing the 1,708-meter-wide sheet of falling water, the deep gorges carved by millions of years of erosion, the mist rising high into the sky, and the Zambezi River curving quietly through it all.
A Flight of Angels helicopter ride over Victoria Falls gives a view that very few other experiences can offer. Although each flight lasts approximately 13 minutes, the incredible sights and unforgettable memories remain with you long after the journey ends.
The Flight
From the helipad at the Victoria Falls, your helicopter lifts off and heads straight toward the Falls. The pilot then guides the aircraft through a series of gentle left and right turns, allowing all passengers on board an uninterrupted view of both sides of the helicopter throughout the flight.
What You’ll See:
The Main Falls: You will see a total height of 1708 m and the waterfall’s width, with its entire curtain of water visible in one sweep.
Eastern Cataract: The section of the Zambezi on the Zambian Side, including the world-famous view from the Knife Edge Bridge below.
The Batoka Gorge: A series of deep, dramatic zigzag canyons carved by the river over millions of years.
Victoria Falls Bridge: The historic railway bridge, built in 1905, spans the gorge between the two sides.
Zambezi River: Sweeping views of both upstream and downstream that illustrate the true size of the Zambezi.
Victoria Falls Town and Livingstone: stark contrast between human habitation and the natural beauty of the Victoria Falls.
Photography From the Air
The Flight of Angels is definitely an iconic photo opportunity at Victoria Falls, and a Victoria Falls helicopter flight offers an even more breathtaking perspective. A wide-angle lens in the 14mm-35mm range performs best, since it captures much more of the landscape than ground-based photos.
While flying, be cautious of the mist created by higher water flow, especially from February to May, as it can land on your camera equipment. Using a wrist strap will help you hold onto your camera during the flight.
On some flights, the aircraft door may remain open for shooting purposes. It is always best to ask the operator about their current policy when you make your reservation.
Best Time for the Helicopter Flight
You’ll discover that each season at Victoria Falls provides a somewhat different experience of the Flight of Angels. Light, water levels, and visibility shift throughout the year, so the view you get largely depends on when you fly.
August to November
You will have clear visibility, abundant water flowing over the falls, and excellent natural light.
June to July
Water levels rise, bringing more mist that can sometimes make photography tricky, so plan around it if pictures are a priority.
February to May
This is the peak water season. You will feel the power of the water’s flow, though heavy mist can occasionally limit visibility and photo clarity.
